On Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day, Rohingya Community in Norway (RCN) joins Rohingya communities worldwide in honoring the victims of genocide and renewing our demand for justice, protection, and the right to return to our ancestral homeland.

We remember those who were killed, subjected to sexual violence, injured, forcibly displaced, or separated from their families during the Myanmar military’s genocidal operations beginning on 25 August 2017. We also remember the victims of earlier decades of massacres, persecution, discrimination, and forced displacement. Our thoughts remain with the Rohingya suffering in refugee camps in Bangladesh, those living without adequate protection in neighboring countries, and families displaced across the world. Their continuing suffering demonstrates that the consequences of genocide have not ended.

Arakan Army (AA) is intensifying a deliberate campaign of killings, forced displacement, arbitrary detention, forced recruitment, land confiscation, movement restrictions, and denial of humanitarian assistance. These actions are part of a systematic manifest to drive the remaining Rohingya from their ancestral homeland. RCN holds the Arakan Army responsible for continuing the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya and warns that, without urgent international intervention and accountability, the Rohingya presence in Arakan may be permanently erased. RCN calls upon Norway, the United Nations, the European Union, and the international community to:

1.      Protect Rohingya civilians and guarantee unrestricted humanitarian access.

2.      Hold the Myanmar military, the Arakan Army, and all other perpetrators accountable for crimes against the Rohingya.

3.      Support international justice proceedings and targeted measures against those responsible.

4.      Reject any repatriation without citizenship, safety, dignity, international protection, and the informed consent of refugees.

5.      Guarantee the Rohingya’s right to return to their original homes and recover their confiscated lands.

6.      Ensure meaningful Rohingya participation in every decision concerning their homeland and future.

Remembrance must be accompanied by action. RCN stands with the survivors, the refugees, and those still facing persecution in Arakan. We will continue defending the history, identity, dignity, and legitimate rights of the Rohingya people.
