Abdus Salam Chaliss, også kjent som U Hla Maung, er en høyt respektert person blant Rohingya-samfunnet i hjemlandet, i Norge og i andre land. Gjennom mange år har han viet sitt liv til humanitært arbeid og til å støtte Rohingyaer i nød. Hans innsats har særlig vært rettet mot flyktninger i leirene i Bangladesh og internt fordrevne Rohingyaer i Akyab/Sittwe-området i Myanmar.
Han er kjent for sin ydmykhet, sitt sterke samfunnsengasjement og sin dype omsorg for mennesker som har mistet hjem, trygghet og grunnleggende rettigheter. Gjennom sitt humanitære arbeid har han støttet sårbare familier og bidratt til å rette oppmerksomheten mot lidelsene og de akutte behovene til fordrevne rohingyaer.
Abdus Salam Chaliss er en av grunnleggerne og en sentral skikkelse i Rohingya Community in Norway (RCN). Han spilte en viktig rolle ved etableringen av organisasjonen i 2005 og har siden starten vært medlem av RCNs sentralkomité. Siden juli 2024 har han vært styreleder i RCN og leder fortsatt organisasjonen i dag. Hans erfaring, veiledning og langvarige engasjement har bidratt betydelig til organisasjonens utvikling, stabilitet og kontinuitet.
I organisasjonen har han arbeidet for å styrke samholdet blant rohingyaene, bevare deres identitet, støtte humanitære tiltak og fremme deres rettigheter og verdighet. Han har hele tiden vært trofast mot RCNs mål om å representere rohingya-samfunnet og bygge solidaritet mellom rohingyaer i Norge og mennesker som er rammet av forfølgelse og fordrivelse andre steder.
For mange rohingyaer representerer Abdus Salam Chaliss et liv viet til tjeneste, ansvar, medfølelse og solidaritet med sitt folk. Hans langvarige humanitære arbeid og engasjement i RCN har gjort ham til en høyt verdsatt og tillitsfull person både i organisasjonen og i det bredere rohingya-samfunnet.
Abdus Salam Chaliss, also known as U Hla Maung, is a highly respected person among the Rohingya community in the homeland, in Norway, and in other countries. For many years, he has dedicated his life to humanitarian work and to supporting Rohingya people in need. His efforts have been especially directed toward refugees in the camps in Bangladesh and internally displaced Rohingya in the Akyab/Sittwe area of Myanmar.
He is known for his humility, strong community commitment, and deep care for people who have lost their homes, safety, and basic rights. Through his humanitarian work, he has supported vulnerable families and helped draw attention to the suffering and urgent needs of displaced Rohingya communities.
Abdus Salam Chaliss is one of the founders and a central figure of Rohingya Community in Norway (RCN). He played an important role in the formation of the organisation in 2005 and has served continuously as a member of its Central Committee since its establishment. He has served as Chairperson of RCN since July 2024 and continues to lead the organisation today. His experience, guidance, and long-standing commitment have contributed significantly to the development, stability, and continuity of RCN.
Within the organisation, he has worked to strengthen unity among Rohingya people, preserve their identity, support humanitarian initiatives, and promote their rights and dignity. He has remained committed to RCN's mission of representing the Rohingya community and building solidarity between Rohingya people in Norway and communities affected by persecution and displacement elsewhere.
For many Rohingya, Abdus Salam Chaliss represents a life devoted to service, responsibility, compassion, and solidarity with his people. His enduring humanitarian work and commitment to RCN have made him a trusted and valued figure both within the organisation and throughout the wider Rohingya community.
